Annual Checkflight

The Club rules state that members have to do a check flight with an instructor once a year - it's been a year now since I did my General Skills Test so I had better book it.

When my slot arrives, Steve asks what do I want to do? It seems that the instructors already know who is flying well and those who are getting dangerous - and the rule is to enable the instructors to force the dodgy ones to go up with an instructor. I elect to do some general stuff and power fail landings.

Wanted to impress, but failed - never mind.

Steve also taught me the 'falling leaf' method of losing height. This is a sort of combination of side-slipping and s-turns. You apply more roll with the ailerons than can be corrected by the rudder, so the plan will yaw to that side, and then do the same in the other direction - hence falling leaf. Not quite so easy as I can't stop balancing it into a normal side-slip.

Despite not being as good as I can be, I was signed off as OK.
