Compton Abbas

Having failed to get to Compton Abbas last time, we were hoping to get there today. The forecast hadn't been too good, but for a change it turned out better than advertised. We had a syndicate meeting in the morning and also saw the new airfield manager - hooray, we have been given permission to erect a hangar.

I have the outbound leg. After checkout and fuelling we are soon off on runway 08 and a climbing circuit and we are off to the south west. Earlier, it looked like it would be OK above the clouds if we could get a gap to go up. However, by the time we are airborne, the clouds have thickened but raised suitably, so we can cruise at 2500'. Visibility isn't bad and we can even see the needles glinting in the distance. It is relatively smooth too. Approaching Compton, we have to climb a little for a correct over head join. With the microlight circuit at just 600' there is a fair height to lose on the deadside and then we cross to the edge of the wood and turn downwind. Turning final we are told that there is a 12 knot wind, fortunately virtually straight down the runway (also 08) and the landing goes well. We park up and walk to the clubhouse.

After booking in and paying the landing fee, we head to the cafe for the obligatory tea and bacon butties - however we are to be disappointed in that they stop doing bacon sandwiches at 11:30. Strangely, they will do a sausage sandwich, so I have one of those.

Ian has the P1 seat for the way home. After check and warm-up (this takes longer now the weather is turning), we take off and just carry on in the same direction. A pleasant and uneventful journey home and a deadside join and down.

Excellent.
